It is a mistake to think that autonomous product development is harmful for absorbing foreign technology, because the underlying factor behind both ways is technological learning. By reviewing the historical experiences of Japan's and South Korea's auto industries, this essay argues that autonomous product development is not only the necessary condition for indigenous innovation, but also the best way to learn and absorb foreign technology.
